Frequently Asked Questions
Can my baby join if she’s only just started walking?
Little Starshine Ballet offers baby ballet in Plymouth and Tavistock from as soon as the little ones are mobile on their feet, even if they need support.
Our age-appropriate dance programme is constructed so the babies benefit from gentle, imaginative ballet-style movement. Our classes support early motor development, sensory stimulation, and body awareness through music, props, and playful interaction. They also nurture bonding between adult and child, encourage rhythm and listening skills, and introduce babies to social settings in a calm, joyful way.
At Little Starshine Ballet School in Plymouth we have both Wednesdays at St Bartholomew's Church, and Sundays at the YMCA Plymouth available for our tiniest dancers to begin their journey with confidence and delight.
What should my child wear ?
For your child’s first class at any level, anything comfy is fine — soft clothes they can move in easily. Once they’ve settled in, we’ll guide you on what’s needed. Come to your first class and Miss Tracy will be happy to guide you with any questions
For our youngest dancers (Starlings and Shimmers), ballet attire is not compulsory, but highly recommended. A leotard and ballet tights allow your child to move freely and comfortably. Wearing similar attire also fosters a sense of belonging and pride — children feel part of something special.
Ballet shoes are strongly advised for all levels. Socks or bare feet can be slippery or restrictive, while soft ballet shoes support safe movement and help children slide, point, and balance with ease.
As children progress into our independent Sparkles classes and beyond, ballet attire becomes mandatory, once your child has settled in. We have our own beautiful branded uniforms — not compulsory, but they truly make our dancers feel like stars. The co-ordinated look enhances group identity, boosts confidence, and adds a touch of magic to every class.
Need ballet shoes or uniforms?
We have everything you might need — from beautiful tutus, skirted leotards, ballet tights and high quality leather or satin ballet shoes.
We are always available for any questions before we see you on your first day, so please feel free to make contact
Are there stage performances ?
Yes, absolutely!
Each year, we host our enchanting Annual Showcase at the beautiful Wharfside Theatre in Tavistock, where families are invited to celebrate the magic, growth, and sparkle of their little dancer’s journey. It's a joyful occasion filled with twirls, smiles, and proud moments—an unforgettable experience where every child gets their chance to shine on stage and feel like a star.
What happens if we miss a class?
We understand that life happens!
While we don’t offer refunds for missed classes, you will be welcome to attend a make-up session at any of our other venues.
Do the adults stay in the room during ballet classes?
Yes — for our youngest dancers in the Starlings class (Walkers to 2.5 years), grown-ups stay and actively join in. It’s a gentle, playful experience designed to support bonding and confidence through shared movement, songs, and props.
For Shimmers (2.5 to 4 years), adults are warmly present and participation is encouraged. Children build confidence through gentle ballet technique, storytelling, and imaginative dance.
For Sparkles and beyond the children gently transition from playful steps into a more structured class. These are independent classes—however, for safeguarding and reassurance, a parent/carer must remain on-site or new by.

How much do classes cost?
The sessions are £6.50 each and payable half termly. Fees vary depending on the term length which runs alongside the school term timetable. In general, it is normally 6 or 7 weeks long. We do not offer 'drop in' classes as we follow a dance programme that progresses each week and consistency is essential to ensure the best learning environment. The children are able to start at any point during a term and we will ensure that they feel welcomed and encouraged as we gently integrate them into the sessions.
See you soon!
